Background of the Study:
Flood disasters have become increasingly frequent and severe in many parts of Nigeria, with Yenagoa Local Government Area being particularly vulnerable. Effective disaster management strategies are critical for mitigating the adverse effects of flooding on lives, property, and local economies (Ifeoma, 2023). Local government authorities, in collaboration with state and federal agencies, have implemented various measures including early warning systems, evacuation plans, and community awareness programs (Chukwu, 2024). Despite these interventions, challenges persist in terms of resource allocation, coordination, and timely response (Nneka, 2023). Recent studies highlight the importance of integrating modern technology and community-based approaches to enhance disaster resilience (Uche, 2024). This research investigates the effectiveness of flood disaster management strategies, aiming to provide insights for improved policy formulation and operational efficiency in managing flood risks (Obi, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Yenagoa faces recurring flood disasters with management strategies that are often hampered by inadequate resources and poor coordination. The limited effectiveness of current measures results in prolonged recovery periods and significant economic and social disruptions (Chinwe, 2023).
Objectives of the Study:
To evaluate the current flood disaster management strategies.
To identify challenges in the implementation of these strategies.
To propose recommendations for enhancing disaster management effectiveness.
Research Questions:
How effective are the current flood management strategies?
What challenges hinder efficient flood disaster management?
What improvements can enhance flood disaster response?
Research Hypotheses:
Current flood management strategies are insufficient to handle disaster severity.
Poor coordination negatively impacts flood response efforts.
Technological integration improves disaster management outcomes.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it addresses the critical need for effective flood disaster management. Its findings are expected to inform policy improvements and practical measures that enhance community resilience against flood risks (Okoro, 2024).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Flood Disaster Management: The systematic approach to preventing and mitigating flood impacts.
Resilience: The capacity of a community to recover from disasters.
Coordination: The organized integration of efforts among various agencies.
